Call me old fashioned, but I ALWAYS want explorer (by which I mean Start/My Documents or Start/My Computer/C to open in 'Folders' mode, as in open, then click 'folders'in the top bar.

I do this every damn time I open explorer, and have never found a default option for it.
Is there one, and how?

if you go to view, folder options and select view, folder views, apply to all folders does that not default your prefered choice ?

Its easy - you just need to change the way you normally open explorer
Here are some tips:
From the desktop, right click the My Computer icon and choose Explore (make sure the My computer icon is on the desktop obviously - if not let me know and I will show you how to put it there easily)
Or - might be suited to your needs - you can still click Start/My Computer but instead on normal click - right click and choose "Explore"
or
My favorite and the easiest by far - just hit the "Windows Key" and "E" on the keyboard and see what happens :)

Like you I like using Explorer in the Classic mode.
I like to have it open pointing to My Computer. Of course you could change and have it point to any folder you want.

c:\windows\EXPLORER.EXE /n, /e,/select, c:\

Create a short cut in the Start menu for explorer and modify it to look like the above.

Homebuilt Iwill KK266R-Plus, 768mb, WinXp Pro

actually, you don't have to create a shortcut.
right click on explorer (not through start button - the folder icon)
select properties
enter that same information on the "target"

c:\windows\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,c:\
