Funning thing happened upon a purchase of my Gateway E-macine T2742 tower. Upon reformatting it with W2KP SP4 I am unable to start up or power up the computer without removing both the CMOS and power cord.

I've tried putting it in standby or hibernate to no avail.
Although it comes preloaded with XP Home SP2 I have loaded all the drivers except the BIOS. I have an inkling it's the BIOS update that I tried loading, but got some error stating my T2742 tower was not compatible.

It runs fine when running, but would like to put it in at least standby or hibernate without havin to take out the CMOS battery and power cord everytime.

ANY IDEAS? Should I reformat it with XP Home? If so, I don't have the original version that came with the computer as I purchased it used.

I am having deja vu here, i responded to this post yesterday and it was gone this morning. was starting to wonder if i had one to many servasas last night and killed those brain cells. your post has change a little from the first one i saw, you stated it was acting funny and shutting down before you installed 2k and you hadnt tried to update the bios yet either. the bios update failure doesnt sound good, you should probably try to resolve that issue first. my other ideas are the cpu may be over heating, check the bios settings for high temp shutdown, make sure it isnt set to low. make sure the cpu fan is functioning properly and blow out the heatsink, ive seen them get real fuzzy from dust and traps heat. second thought was a flaky power supply, swap that out if you can.

hope this helps,
