Hi all!

I have a problem with one of my PC's running W2k Prof. The system hangs during startup on the windows splash screen. I have tried the following:

* Safe Mode - system hangs.
* Recovery Console / repair - systems hangs on "starting windows".
* Tried a 2nd W2k install - system hangs on "starting windows" during install.
* Ran Fixboot / Fixmbr 3rd party software - no joy
* Ran the manufacturers Hard Disk Diagnostics - Disk passed without any probs detected.
* Tried to slave the drive - it prevented the master HDD from starting up.
* I can access the data via a dos data recovery program, but it retrieves the data in 8.3 format.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can repair the W2k startup or to recover the data (+\- 40gb).

Does it work if you have your new "working" drive on the first IDE cable and the broken drive in the second IDE cable?

Unplug all other drives.

Hope this helps. Let me know.

Randy,

Thanks for your response. I have tried various configurations but every time it prevents the master from starting windows.

Any ideas?

leave it as master, slave a spare drive and boot from knoppix cd....maybe that works?!
