I am installing some software on a new W2K/SQL2K server. SP2 for each app is what the software vendor requires.

Part of the install is to create a "service", but during the installation I get an error 1057 - service cannot be created. My only choice is "OK". The next thing is an error 1920 saying the service cannot be started (duh!).

I am logging in as the administrator; tried both local and on the domain. The vendor says it's a permissions error and admin doesn't appear to have the rights to create a service. They cannot tell me how to fix this. W2K is out of the box... we've made no special tweaks.

Vendor is saying that the domain rights are overriding the local rights, so I unplugged it from the network. Same error, same place.

If the vendor can't help me... who can? Thanks. Tinerz

Try this. Log on locally, go into my computer, manage. Theres the local users and groups. Check who's a member of the local admin group. I had problems because of this, but to be honest, I don't think this will solve your problem. We just need a place to start looking. Also, check the event viewer and see who it thinks is the master browser. Also, let us know about what type of network. How many servers, type of domain, that kind of thing. Thanks. Glen A. Johnson

Glen, thank you so much for your reply. I just got past the problem (not to say I won't get snagged on another)!

Remember the vendor was saying that it was a permissions error? That was the clue as you picked up on. What the vendor didn't tell me was that the install procedure was creating a username and assigning a password to it. Because of our password policies and restrictions, this embedded password did not meet our restrictions therefore it was bombing. Had the vendor mentioned this to me it might have dawned on me... but all he was focused on was the service it was trying to create. Without the login, it couldn't create the service.

Something to remember...

Your suggestion to check local policies and log in locally had already been researched, so you were on the right track. In the end, I accomplished the install connected to the domain, just like I wanted to. If a "local" install was required, don't you think they'd put this in the install instructions???

Thanks again. Appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Glad it worked out. Most of the time it's simple stuff, just need a place to start looking. Good luck.
