Has anyone experienced the following problem?

Server: W2K, RAS using PPTP.

Periodically I get:

Remote Access
"Event ID = 20049 - The user connected to port %blah% has been disconnected because the authentication process did not complete within the required amount of time"

No problem until it starts happening with every authentication attemp and no one can connect to RAS.

Restarting the service does not help. Only a reboot.

Looking at performance monitor nothing looks suspicious. RAS just stops authenticating. Already moved to a different box with same results.

When you say "only a reboot" are you saying that users are able to authenticate after you reboot the server. If so, at what point does it stop working after the reboot.

When did you start experiencing this problem? was any new software or hardware added to the server?

Is it happening to all users or some? If it only happens to some, check the access rights of the users.

please post some more information

Apply (or reapply) SP4. Make sure you save the replaced files so you can rollback.

SP4 is a love/hate thing. It fixes a lot of problems, including some odd things with RRAS, but every once in a while it goes really bad and messes with some things (especially RRAS). If you have recently applied SP4, that could be part of the problem, although everything bad that I have seen has been a matter of it just doesn't work -- not it works for a while then dies.

There are also some things that could be going on with some of the bug fixes from MS, but again I would expect those to either work or not work -- no in between. It might be worth noting anything that you have applied recently.

What are the clients seeing when all of this is going on?? Are the errors consistent there?

What are you authenticating against? Is there a domain involved, and if so is the VPN server also the DC? Thinking about this for a moment I would almost suspect a problem there more than an issue with RAS specifically.

Thank you both for your replies. I will try to redo SP4. I also turned off 'software compression' and turned on RAS tracing.

To re-iterate the problem. The server responds well to users. Then I will get the 20049 error once in a minute. The user cannot loggin. Then I will get 5 in a minute, then 30, then 60, then 100, and so on until NO users can log in.

They get the 'verify username and password' for a while and time-out with a 691?(can't remember the timeout error)

Basically I have to reboot the Ras server to clear whatever problem there is.

I've opened a case with M$ and we weren't able to figure anything out. They wanted to setup Network Monitor and I will do that next. I just posted hoping someone else has experienced this problem.
