Hi,

I am running Windows 2000 on an 800mhz PC with 512mb RAM with SP4 installed. Last week I downloaded the latest hotfix's from Microsoft and since then (I think) the computer will go on a go-slow for several minutes.

Looking at Task Manager, there will be no applications running and the processor is running at 100% or thereabouts. If I look at process's, "server.exe" is using up the CPU, usually at 96-98%.

The computer is networked but removing the cable doesn't change anything. I suspect it is one of the hotfix's that is the culprit as that is the only change made at the time, no new software or anything like that.

I don't know if they install in chronological order but from the top down, this is what I have in Add/Remove Programes....
KB823182, 823559, 824105, 825119, 826232, 828035, 828741, 828749, 835732, 837001 and also SP4

I hope someone can help.........
Thanks

Go to and download and install a program called Starter from Codestuff.

This program does the same thing as Microsoft's 'msconfig', which is not available on Win2000.

Using this, you can disable your startup items one at a time until you find the culprit.

Thanks for that dearingkr. Will let you know how I went

Hi BC,
Thanks for that. I have already read that thread and will try it tomorrow. I actually started to uninstall that hotfix today but an error msg appeared warning me that other programmes may stop responding etc etc so I backed out. Now I have read your very cluey comments in the above thread I feel a lot more confident to uninstall KB835732. As in the past, thanks very much.
Cheers....

Hi all,
