Hi...

Since the update of sp2 ...w media player wont play divx files...?

If I use the divx player it plays fine....but I prefer w media player.

I have the latest version of the codec ie,5.2.1...which is supposed to be sp2 compatible.

I have read that insome cases this is resolved by re-installing directx 9b...unfortunately I have directx 9c.; so I can't even try it!...directx 9c can't be uninstalled...?

What can I do guys....?

Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, try WM 10 and see if it works.

also, have you reinstalled the codec after the update?

Does this help. It appears there is a workaround

"Unfortunately, the temporary fix involves disabling a new security feature called: Data Execution Prevention or DEP. Here is the complete support page for your perusal from the good folks at DivX. "

Dont really want to try 10 until it's offically released.

I done a clean install with sp2 then installed the codec..still no luck...didn't really want to modify the boot ini....
Thought there might be another solution.?

yeah, try disabling DEP as in the article above.

BTW, WM 10 is released officially! Run Windows update and choose custom. It will be listed as an option for XP machines.

I've done that and it's not there...I've also checked for updates on the help function of media player and it states I have the latest version of windows media player 9 series?

Yep I'm sure I dont have it ...and know its on the site...was a bit worried that it's not coming up as an upadte?...thats what made me think it was still beta.

yeah, that is interesting. So you did go to custom updates and you chose Select Optional Software Updates. And still not listed.

Well, i would just ignore that then and go to the link I provided and get it there. You must have:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Center Edition, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

System requirements:

Did you try disabling DEP. NOte: if you do disable DEP, your PC won't use all the security benefits provided with SP2.

Tried v 10 still no luck....don't really want to dable with the boot ini for dep.

I am not experiencing the same problems as yourself with Divx and movies. I have all of my DVD's encoded into DivX on my HD and they all work since SP2.

Is it all Divx movies that you are having problems with, or just one or two?

If it is just a few and not all you could try running the free DivFix software on them to make sure the index is not corrupt.
You could also try installing the codec while in Safe Mode

The reason why its not coming up on Windows update is that it only shows up on machine that is set to American language, I had a few new Dell laptops where even tho I had selected everything UK it still had American as default language for NON-Unicode programs and WMP10 showed up on windows update.

As soon as I set that to UK it wouldn't detect on Windows update. So must be that its only americans that are allowed the update at the moment :) although it still works fine on my my UK set pc at home.

But thats a bit away from the problem with your divx playback. I have had TONS of problems with divx playback and to me it seems they came from having to many codecs installed from various sources.

To fix the problem I uninstalled all codecs that I had installed even the divx and xvid ones.

Then I downloaded the Matroska pack and my divx playback worked perfectly. I had to reboot to get it working properly. You can find the codec here
It's a very good codec pack and its not to bloated.
