can you establish a permanent vpn connection between two cisco routers the same way you can do it using sonic walls
 
Yes you can setup an IPsec tunnel between two cisco routers. You can set it up to stay up 100% of the time or it can establish the tunnel only when interesting traffic is present and then it turns off after period of inactivity.

I don't know anything about sonicwalls - except that I replaced our previous administrator's with Cisco IOS/FW routers ;-)
 
thanks. im after joining a company that does a lot of cisco installations. do you know any site that i could use to get the best practices for designing a cisco network i.e. 2 routers, failover internet connections etc
 
take a look at and navigate to the support / documentation section.

There is a ton of examples on how to configure VPN's from rtr-rtr, rtr-pix, etc....
