I have a small problem, we have a standard adsl router and built in NAT firewall. The problem i face with regards to VPN is i am unsure as to which ports VPN actually uses, so i can enable port mappings on my router. The literature supplied by the manufacturer, tells me to open ports 1-65535 on TCP and UDP, now perhaps i am being a little stupid, but setting up port mappings on so many ports in my eyes is all but rendering the firewall protection of my server as redundant.

Now if i knew which ports that VPN operates on, i could protect my server and still allow my VPN connection. So can anyone point me in the right direction???????

Which ports need to be opened for running VPN

A: PPTP VPN uses TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE); L2TP: UDP Port 1701; IPSec: Pass IP protocol 50 and 51. Note: 47 is a protocol number and not TCP port. The protocol name is GRE. It'll make a big difference when configuring your firewall or router.
