I setup Windows SBS 2003 and then Routing and remote access at work. I set the Actiontec router to forward port 1723 and GRE 47 to the the server local IP address. I was able to VPN and Remote Desktop Connection from home into the server. Everything worked great. Then I ran Windows update remotely which required a restart. I used the shutdown command with restart option with a delay of 60 seconds to get out of remote desktop connection.

Now I can't establish a VPN - error 800. The same thing happened last week after restarting the computer remotely.

In both cases I confirmed with a phone call that the server was running.

So there is something about restarting a computer remotely. How can I fix it? How am I supposed to do a remote restart through a VPN connection?

Thanks.

First of all, you're much better off establishing vpn connections thru a hardware router, not direct to the server...

The only thing I could think of is to ensure the routing and remote access service is set to automatic and is starting fine.

Anything in your event logs?

Thanks.

Any recommendations for a hardware firewall router? I have 35 clients on Windows 2003 domain with XP and 2K clients. I currently use an Actiontec GT701 router with the built-in NAT enabled. I don't have any other firewall, but it is on my shopping list. The Qwest DSL service authenticates with PPPoA. Most routers only support PPPoE.

Once I have a VPN hardware device in place, then I should be able to use Windows XP to connect to it from home?

I like to split internet connections if the client has 2 IP's.

Typically, I use a linux based solution as an all in one proxy box for internet use. Then they have a cisco for secure incoming connections. The cisco doesn't get used for surfing unless the linux goes down.
