What version of the PIX are you running? Do a "sh ver" at the prompt to find out. if it is 6.2 or higher, use PDM (Pix Device Manager - free download from Cisco) to configure your VPN - it's fast and easy if your not setting up something too complicated. If not, upgrade or else you'll have to do it from the CLI (command line interface).

You'll need to download the Cisco VPN client for your home machines. I would suggest searching this forum on VPN since I know this has been discussed here before.

Hi,

Do I have to use the "Cisco VPN client" or could I use the VPN function that comes with windows XP?

To enable Cisco's 128bit 3DES you have to use their client.

But, do I HAVE to use the "Cisco VPN client" or could I use the VPN function that comes with windows XP?

No - you do not have to use the Cisco client to establish a non-secure connection to the PIX.

To give you a place to start if you really really want to do it through CLI is here: This link will give you information on setting your PIX up for 3DES IPSEC tunnels, which use the Cisco VPN client. Or even PPTP tunnels which you can use without the client.

Here is another link from Cisco with lots of good VPN configs:

Hope this'll help you.
