VPN authentication

We have an 1841 router. Recently I configured a remote access VPN for it. This is working without any problems. However, we are using pre-shared keys and would like to use something a bit more secure. Ideally we would use key fobs. Does anyone have pointers to docs for how to setup certificates or use fobs? What hardware handles the actual authentication? We have lots of linux servers if needed. Can we generate our own certificates?
