I've started a new business from home. A potential client wanted to know if a VPN would be ok to set up in order to share files and make communications easier for our work. What can be shared and what can be kept private on my system? How is this accomplished?

The VPN connection will make the remote computer seem as if it's sitting next to yours. What's shared and what's private depends upon the remote user's access to your server.

You'll need to be vigilant when you do anything regarding directory sharing or user privileges.

If you are seriously considering doing this yourself, it is important you read up on VPN and IP routing. that will make things a lot easier to understand, because there are many things you need to do to make VPN work safely.
Otherwise it's wise to have a professional network engineer set up the vpn tunnel for you. You will probably need other hardware or software also to make it work.
