Volume control missing in Notification area

Hi,
My laptop's volume control has disappeared from the notification area and the volume check box on the notification area properties is greyed out..It used to be there, where did it go?

System icons do not appear in the notification area on a Windows Vista-based computer until you restart the computer

Try your luck with a different user even if you have to create one.

Are there any errors in the Device Manager concerning Sound Drivers? Uninstalling the Sound Card driver and reinstalling it may be worthwhile?
 
Thanks linney, as usual you have lots of help to offer.

I noticed, before trying some of those ideas, that the other user on the laptop did have a volume control in the notification area, so I simply logged out ( as my user) and logged back in - the check box in the Notification area properties was no longer greyed out and checking it restored the control! All is well. ( I like Windows, but sometimes [banghead]).
