Does anyone know what version of the definity allows for VOIP.
My compnay has decided that this is now the way forward, and wants to implement it.
We are current with a G3si v8.

Thanks in Advance

John

I pretty sure 9.5 is the earliest version with VoIP.

So it looks like we need to change, does anyone know if we can go about an upgrade.
We currently have a 2 cab 2 spe system G3si v8 and Defintiy Audix v4(i believe).
Or would we have to have a new switch?

Sorry for my ignorance, still v.new to this, but atleast I have now (finally) got the company to stump up for an admin course.

Thanks in Advance.

John

We have VOIP on 9.5, we are having a few problems to 2 sites with calls dropping though, we suspect QoS on the router. Definity is fine.

We also run 4612 IP phones over a wireless LAN

The upgrade from 8 to 9.5 should be simple but probably quite expensive. There are also hefty costs involved in VoIP licences and RTU's (Right To Use).

You have to decide if you are looking at using VoIP between two Definity's, where you might just need a couple of MedPro cards, or require IP Telephony which will mean a lot of user licences for the Softphone Client.

Make sure you get a total cost from your supplier and get the training added in so you don't have to go back to your finance dept.

Cheers,

Ronster

Ronster,

Thanks mate, sounds like this will turn into a costly project, but since it will save millions in phone costs each year, i suppose it's worth it.
And good to see, more training courses for me!

Thanks

John

V8 fully supports VoIP. You need a C-LAN board (TN799), a Media Processor (MedPro) board (TN2302), and the correct RTU software.

Depends on what you mean by VOIP. R7 supports ip trunking and softphones. R8 added hardphones. R9 eliminated the need for media extentions when using hard or soft phones. -CL

Our deployement of voip did not save $ on phones. Softphone wasn't viable with all the processing the PC's were using- too application heavy. We ended up buying more costly IP hard phones. Hopefully we can eventually get PC's capable of running the softphone.

The best release for VOIP is MV1.2 but at a minimum R10, this will save you $ in RTU's, if you plan on deploying IP phones, it was also the first release in my option to support IP phones successfully and allows for Speed/Duplex settings on the CLAN.
Multivantage adds some more support and add benefits, including support for the 4620 and 4602 IP Phone, which offer alot for the cost compared to the Gen2 phones (4606,4612,4624).
Also in addition to the software upgrade you will need a CLAN TN799DP, you should have an adddional CLAN for failover if you are deploying IP Phones for more than just a trial, however you could just use one for cost savings. Also in addition you will need a MedPro TN2302AP, this provides the IP to TDM conversion, it support up to 64 uncompressed (G.711) or 32 (G.729) sessions. Then the IP phones and RTU's.

Some hints:
-Upgrading to Multivantage will get you some sample RTU's for IP phones and softphones (agents) I believe, you will get 5 licenses with the upgrade.
-Also Definity Audix is going to be end of saled soon, so you may want to look at changing Voicemail during the upgrade process, a migration path would be the Intuity LX - A key issue that has to evaluated before deploying VOIP is Quality of Service on your Network (LAN if these are IP Phone on the LAN onsite with the Definity) or WAN if these are remote IP Phones. Many companies don't look into this and it results in the VOIP pilot projects failing, however if this is addressed you will enjoy the benefit and cost savings that VOIP has to offer.

Any more questions? Thank you,
Frank Mirecki
