We have a few voip phones, with the voip server in the building. The hard phones have been trouble, with dropouts and occasional bad quality phone calls. The sip provider is absolutely hopeless. The modem router is a DG834Gv5 with fw V1.6.00.33. There is no option in the router interface to edit QoS settings. How can I improve our voip system? Could softphones help? Is,there a way to have an iphone connected to a handset or something, could that, even help?? We are using an iPECS-50A voip server and iPECS LIP-8012D phones.

My second question is in regards to auto attendants. I need to edit auto attendant settings. I assume this is done using the VOIP server. When the IP address is entered, I get a station program option and Admin & Maintenance. Where would I find auto attendant?

A new router with QOS and dedicated correctly specified voice circuit, if thats not an option you can try the below but infrastructure is the key here without the correct harware and cabling you will be no doubt pulling your hair out for ever and a day.(both above and below are things that are buisness critical on any SIP/Voip deployment)

Step A.
First of all you need to ensure sip alg is switched off on the router , then look at your codecs if you are using g711 try lowering to g729, this may help but will not solve things outright.

Step B
QOS needs implementing on your lan switch especially as i assume you PC`s will be connected to the same switch, look up 802.1p on the net , ideally you need to segregate your voice and data traffic by means of vlan and have 802.1p qos configured.

To your Q2:

After login go to PGM228, named CCR - Customer Call Routing. Here the auto attendants menu appears including where to be transferred when dialing 1, 2 or other digits.
