We are trying out a few 1140 IP phones on our system. My CIO asked the following question:

"Do you know if we have the ability to do auto-dialing from Outlook contacts via a Nortel TSP or TAPI?"

Can anyone help me with the answer? I can't find any info on this, but I'm new to the VoIP world, so I may be overlooking a very common research resource.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I know you can do it off a I2050 softphone but I have not tried it off another IP phone before.

Hello,

What do you mean by auto-dialing?

We use the Application Gateway 1000 (product from Citrix). This option gives the click-to-call. It is a nice feature and I like this alot. This does not work with OUTLOOK contact but it will work with any phone numbers you see on the internet. When you point to the phone numbers, it create a hyperlink and all you need to click on the numbers and the IP phone will activate the numbers on the screen.
It works with the phone numbers on the emails as well.

If you want it works with your OUTLOOK contact, you will need work with the Microsoft Live communication server (LCS). Ask your account rep for more information.

You can use Click-To-Call feature via smartagent through outlook. The problem with smart-agent is that it has to be installed on every computer as well as beeing maintained. And as far as I know you have to log in every time you restart your os. You could always run LDAP sync but still you have to provide your domain username and pwd. Since you have to install a client sw, you can't use it on i.e thinclients. The pros with smartagent is that it converts numbers in a html document to a clickable link. easy and fancypancy...

The new i2050 softphone ver 3 (the current avail is ver 2) will be included with a local TAPI device again. You also had this in ver 1 of the softphone. But this is just rumors I've heard from representatives @ Nortel. You only have to select the softphone tapi-line device in outlook to make it work.

When using TAPI server in a domain The only thing you have to do is to issue tcmsetup command on every machine, and select the tapi line device in outlook once the TAPI server is properly installed. This again will not work on thinclients, nor in Internet Explorer or Word or etc. But I have for 1 customer of hours programmed a little program with visual .net code that remains in systray. With only marking the phone number in any program and then click the "F8" key it uses the TAPI server to dial the phonenumber. Easy and Fancy enough, allthough it don't make any clickable links in certain selected programs as click to call feature does, nor will it be useable in thinclients.

Btw: Live Communication Server is on it's way out. Exchange 2007 and OCS (Office Communication Server) is the new fancypancy thing on the Nortel front now.

We are totally planning on using OCS & Exchange 2007K as it (hopefully) will really streamline precense, video confrencing and VM.
