All --

I have an IPO 500 at the remote end and a Definity S8700 at the HQ. We had an outside contractor setup the IP trunks connecting both of them.

We have a direct, private PVC connecting the sites directly via IP. There is nothing else on this line ( etc)

At times i see spikes upwards of 100ms in ping responses, but nothing lasting more than 3-4 times in succession. The average ms response time between sites is 12-15ms.

On the IPO, we're using G711 uLaw 64k. What we've noticed so far is the far-end site tells me they hear me (HQ end) choppy sometimes while i hear them perfectly. What other codec could i try ? assuming it's a codec issue.

any ideas on what i could try to look into ?

Thanks all..

You could try G729 which is lower bitrate.

What you really need to do is setup a call between sites and then watch the call in System status and you will see all the jitter, packet loss etc Then you can narrow down the issue.

I'd stay with G711 myself... G729 gives audible artifacts (primarily because it is more compressed)

However, i'd follow mrriddles advice and look at the netwrok in terms of Jitter, packet loss etc

Where are you in the world?

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Thanks guys.

I'm in NYC. You mentioned system status -- is that an application within the IP office user 4.2 ?

I'm relatively new to avaya, but I have a networking background. Could i use any other tool to monitor packet loss, jitter between the two ends ?

I know Cain/Abel can sniff and it's been a while since i used it, was wondering what tools are available that focus on hitter, packet loss while a call is in place.

What is the bandwith on the line that is connecting these? does it happen when it is a single call or when there are multiple calls. I always run 729 on a WAN link.

Bandwidth between the two sites is 1.5 Mpbs synchronous.

This is a private network running over a Private PVC connection from the ISP.

In other words, the communication doesn't traverse many routers or fw's at all. I can ping across using my private LAN IP's.

It happens on a single call. I've initiated calls all day today and everything was fine. I was over in the definity chat and noticed that i should have something called VOIP Messaging Manger as part of my defintity install ?

I'm sure i can use that to monitor the circuit for RTT, jitter, latency and packet loss right ?

I'm sure there are thrd-party linux command-line apps out there too.

Apart from monitoring the circuit i really need to learn how to setup the IP trunks on the IPO side since i'm a avaya n00b.

I would start with why your ping times are raising to 100ms. The problems you are having sound to me like it is based on latency. I would also confirm what the MTU is on the links between the sites.
