vmail to email on embedded 5.0(8 & 15)

I have set up several different installations and haven't been successful on this to date. I have programmed ip routes to the servers (internal, flat no vlans) and tried the SMTP settings with just the server address and also included a user name and password....I can't make it work!!!!! What's the trick? What I see in SysMon is them queueing up, but that is all. IT guy says he sees nothing hitting the server from the IP Office address. Help is appreciated.
