I have a system on 9.1.6 with VM pro 9.1.6 that I am trying to use voicemail to email with a gmail account. I have less secure apps enabled for the email account and it does not have 2 step authentication. When I try to test sending out a voicemail with the control panel app I get a 10043 error(something about the authtentication method, can't turn on StartTLS in VM pro thought it just auto used it?). I turned on logging and when I check the log I get this error which I can't make heads or tails of:

Unexpected program error
Start_Lock - calling thread does not own os_critical_section

Searching this error on tek-tips does not show any results (searched for Start_Lock)

I setup same environment on my test system (9.1.6 control unit with 9.1.6 VM pro) and I get same 10043 error in control panel and same weird error in my error log. I am probably missing something very simple or silly but can't for the life of my figure it out.

VM Pro voicemail setup:
domain:smtp.gmail.com
server:smtp.gmail.com
port:587 (have tried port 465 but get error 0)
use authentication
full email address for user name
password

I believe the SMTP settings are unused in manager when using VM pro, but just to be sure
smtp.gmail.com
port 587
from full email address
StartTLS checked
full email for username
password

I have setup voicemail to email in embedded countless times, and I have used VM pro enough to know just the basics but oddly enough this is my first time setting up voicemail to email through VM pro. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I changed the domain to the IP of the VM pro server and still get the same error. Thanks for the response though I am sure that should of been changed .

Can you try some other smtp server?

I don't like gmail, and if I'm not mistaken I had issues before with gmail and VM pro.

If you have a suggestion of a free email provider that you know works with VM pro please let me know.

Why free?

Just pay some peanuts in order for a email provider that really works.

I think your customer makes their money with the telephone system...

Just free for me to test and make sure it works, customer would be willing to pay if needed. I switched my system back to embedded just to be sure it wasn't on my network and I can send it out just fine. Issue seems to be VM pro authenticating with gmail server. Neither 587 (StartTLS) nor 465 (TLS) work correctly.

There is a setting within Gmail that must be turned on in order to get this to work. I cannot remember where it is or what it is called (but, I don't remember what I had for breakfast). I recommend going to Gmail's help page. That is where I found it, once upon a time. Gmail works well when set up properly. I wish I could help you further.

Thanks to technology, we can instantly communicate across the world, but it still doesn't help us know what to say.

It is allow less secure apps which is turned on. I can get it working with embedded voicemail but not through voicemail pro.

I made a tiny bit of progress. Checking the VM pro manual, apperantly VM pro supports SSL/TLS instead of StartTLS which means I should be using port 465 not 587. This brings me to a new error code (0 instead of 10043). So I can start looking into that error code now. Log still shows same error code however.

When I use gmail on VM Pro, I use port 465. Do you have a DNS server setup on the vmail pro server? Can you ping smtp.gmail.com from the vmail server?

Ya I could ping smtp.gmail.com and even with using the IP address I could not get it to work. I upgraded from 9.1.6 to 9.1.8 both control unit and VM pro. I ended up using stunnel as a relay to get it working.

VM Pro setup:
Domain: Name of PC
Server: IP of PC running stunnel (ran it from VM pro PC)
from: full gmail email
use authentication checked
username: full gmail email
password: gmail email password

Stunnel:
Change config smtp gmail settings from 127.0.0.1:25 to VM Pro IP with :25 at end. Save file. Reload config.

Oddly enough the control panel app still gives an error, but testing an actual voicemail does work. Just figured Id pass that along.

Is your domain you are sending the emails to also a google domain?
if so you can use another smtp server that allows sending unencrypted on port 25 to all google domain accounts via aspmx.l.google.com.
