Does anyone know if you can do the VM backup/failover using IIS and hMail server. I have a client that has a VM on server2008R2 at the main site and VM on windows 7 pro with hMail at the backup/failover site. They try to communicate but I get error messages in the hMail server.

Any help please we have been trying to get this to work for 2 months.
Thanks Mike

There are default folders in inetpub\mailroot where mail is dropped and picked up.
Perhaps the issue is there.
Otherwise you should work to put the other vmpro on server os.

You should not use external mailservers for the backup stuff.
You need to setup the backup stuff first and then voicemail to email.
Read the installation manual and you will see what i mean.

you mean the ambiguous I mean thorough notes that Avaya puts out, I saw 2 pages on setting this up and it was very generic. I you have something better please let me know.
Mike

You need to listen.
You cannot use anything else then the build in option!
You need to configure the distributed/backup part first.
When that works then you can configure that hmail stuff again.

I don't have an option only 1 server w/IIS in this SCN with 2 windows 7 PCs w/hMail for SMTP(for the failover only nothig else) for VM and failover/backup. I cannot load IIS on the PCs and was trying hMail for the failover option. So what you are saying is that it will not work.
Mike

Why can't you load IIS on the W7 PC?
You really need to do that otherwise it is just not possible.

BAZINGA!

because it is not available for windows 7 only a management option but not IIS with SMTP.
Mike

You are right, i am confused.
Then you should replace it by a Linux version or a Windows server version.

so no other possibilities to do short of buying a couple of server 2008R2 licenses?
Mike

Yes Linux apps which is free :)

can we mix linus and windows in the same SCN for VM failover?

You do know that it is assumed that each vmpro computer has smtp relay capability.
That means server. Win 7 will not fill that for you.
tlpeter has a alternate solution for you on this matter.

tlpeter was also trying to say that in a vm backup configuration the first entry in each vmpro smtp tab is for the smtp relay.
vmail to email can be the second entry.
Still useful information when you set up vmpro backup.

I think you can but never tried it.

I realize that we need to have the SMTP relay in the first location, I was hoping that the hMail server would fit this bill but it must not.
Thanks
Mike

I have only ever setup-configured-troubleshot a windows smtp relay on both ends.
It may work with win-lin as the bookends.

I also did it on Windows only and it did not work as this is a bug on 8.0
We do run a server edition (primary and secondary) and then it works out of the box.
I did not configure anything and it fallover when the primary vm server was down.

So far I have seen many things break it however all have been net changes.
Now I can tell quickly from dbgview traces if it is working correctly.

I was able to do that too but to be honest i forgot it all :)
It is already a year ago that i did it.
