I have 3 vlans setup on a 4006 switch, how can I allow some ports to be open to two of the three vlans?

As in how are you perceiving this to work?

Its possible to do what you want but doing an auxillaryvlan or by doing a trunk...

I tried trunking but that didn't seem to work. I did a sh trunk and the native vlan seemed to take precedence over the trunk.

In otherwords, I had port 2/4 part of vlan 2 to begin with, then trunked it allowing all three vlans, 1,2,3 the only vlan that had access to port 2/4 was vlan 2. Vlan 1 and 3 could not access port 2/4.

I started with port 2/4 in vlan 2
the command I gave the switch was:
"set trunk 2/4 on 1-3"

I did a "sh trunk" and port 2/4 showed up as:
Port Mode Encapsulation Status Native vlan
"2/4 on dot1q trunking 2"

Am I doing something wrong here?

For what you have configured, your doing nothing wrong.

But if your wanting your computer connected to port 2/4 to communicate across all 3 vlans, it's not going to happen. You need a router to communicate between vlans.

Do you have a supervisor module on this 4006 switch? You may already know this but do a show module.

Yes I have a supervisor module in the switch and two 48 port 10/100 blades.

Unless you have a L3 card in the switch your going to need a seperate router for the 4006's, there are 2 options for the 4006's for router modules:

L3 Router w/ 32 Port 10/100 Copper (WS-X4232-L3)
Sup III Module (WS-X4014)

Or, connecting to a 6500 Series with MSFC2 cards installed as your routers...

Vlans are used to prevent them taking to each other to reduce the boradcast domain so that the network as a whole performs better ------ correct?

So if u want only certain Vlans to communicate, u need to perform InterVlan Routing.

This requires a L3 device with Routing Capabilities.
Route or a Layer 3 switch - like a Catalyst 3550 or a Layer 3 card
