Hello,
My LAN is running low on IP addresses. Will creating a VLAN in my environment allow me to resolve this issue w/out changing my IP address scheme and perhaps going to a different type of subnetting to allow for more hosts?
Nope if you are running out then there is only one answer allocate more addresses and then you could run a new vlan in a diferent address space . When you say you are running out , is there any reason you can't use private addresses ??? What is your addressing scheme now ?
If your LAN is running low...YES - you can create vlan's to create more networking space on the LAN.
For example, let's say you used 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 for your LAN. If you used all 254 addresses and need more, then you will need to create a VLAN and can assign that VLAN 10.1.2.0 255.255.255.0
At this point you will have 2 VLAN's with 512 assignable addresses.
Your switch will need to be a L3 switch to allow for VLANning. I would stay away from using a router to bridge the to network addresses - just puts load on the router and a single point of failure.
Just fiddle with your Addressing schema. I am presuming since you are asking this question, you are small office outfit. I doubt you will have any impact in using a larger addressing space. I am also presuming you dont have public addresses assigned to your network nodes, if you are use private addresses and expand it..
Project price = 0$ (excluding man hours)
But to be honest, without real information we cant give you solution to fit your needs..
