Hi,
There is a default vlan in the switch with vlan id 1.A vlan has been created in a windows system with same vlan id.Now switch is being pinged but not getting successful.on seeing port counters for the windows system,it is found that packets being sent and recieved for unicast and multicast.
Then why does the communication doesnt happen? Is there anything to be set at switch?
Pls let me know if anybody knows on this.
Regards,
Sas

First of all, not sure what you mean by ".. a vlan has been created in a windows system with the same vlan id". I'm guessing you have a NIC that is capable of multiple vlans like the Intel Server cards. If that is the case, first see if you can get the NIC working without the vlan information on the pc. Give it a ip address in the same vlan as what you gave the switch and try the ping. When you start assigning vlan #'s on the NIC I think you have to trunk the port on the switch for vlan information to get sent (i think).

Let us know the type of switch and NIC. More details can be covered then.

Yeah what you said is correct. Its something like that.

Swtich is the Cisco catalyst 4006 with supervisor engine II and cat IOS 7.3 version.0

I create a vlan on the NIC and would like to get those packets generated by the NIC, accepted by the switch and send it across to the designated port.
How do I do trunking for the port?
For example,
I have connected the system to 2/3 port of the switch.and 2/3 is in default vlan 1.I create a vlan on NIC with same vlan id.Then How do I make this communication happen.Basically , when you create VLAN on NIC it sends out 802.1q tagged packets on network.Switch has to accept this tagged packet and send it across to the destination port.
How do we enable this?
If you can help me out in this,it would be great!
Regards,
sas
