I must be getting old. I still can't get used to Vista. I reverted my Vista Business machine back to XP-Pro and am looking forward to trying Win7.

Here are some nagging questions I have related to my wife's VHP machine...

1. How do I turn on the unneccessarilly nagging questions I get whenever I try to do anything? (Seems like I get the "Are you sure? No, really, are you sure?" about everything from deleting file to copying over old files with files from my machine to installing applications to setting configurations.)

2. On my XP-Pro machines I can see picture files as images when displayed as thumnails. The VHP machine displays a static/generic image. This requires my opening each image to rename it. Is there a setting I can change that will allow the picture as the thumbnail?

3. I can see how indexing could be usefull for some people but for me it simply slows things down. I typically know what I'm looking for and generally where it's at. FOR ME the new indexed search is painfull, slow and a resource pig. Can I turn indexing off in Vista without creating havoc with the operating system?

1. To prevent the barrage of questions you are referring to, you can disable UAC (User Account Control). One of several methods to do this is to click the Start button, navigate to the 'Accessories' folder and click 'Run'. When the 'Run' box opens, type msconfig and select 'OK'. Select the 'Tools' tab in the 'System Configuration' utility and scroll down the list and find the 'Disable UAC' tool. Select 'Disable UAC' and click the 'Launch' button. You will need to reboot the computer for the changes to take place.

2. Cycle through the different views in Windows Explorer by clicking the 'Views' button or selecting the drop-down list next to the button. Try Medium Icons, Large Icons, etc. and you should see thumbnails. Also, make sure that 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' is not selected under your Folder Options.

3. If you would like to completely disable the indexing service in Vista, right-click the 'Computer' icon and select 'Manage'. In the left side of the Window, expand 'Services and Applications' and click Services. Scroll down through the list of services and find the 'Windows Search' service. Right-click the 'Windows Search' service and select 'Properties'. Under the service properties dialog box press the 'Stop' button to stop the service and click the drop-down next to 'Startup type:' and select 'Disabled'.

Have a look at Indexing Options in the Control Panel and make sure your Settings are suitable for your needs.

You might like an alternate Search program to try.
