We had an emergency yesterday, the office manager's computer crashed (and it is the one we do payroll on!) and we had to purchase her a new one. The only one we could find that met the specifications of what we needed was loaded with Vista. All the rest of our computers (3) currently run XP professional, with Office XP, in which we use a custom designed Access Database to do most of our work. The back end of the database is on my computer with the front end on the other computers. The computers use a peer to peer network via a central hub setup. The boss won't let us get a server (blech!!). My questions: 1) Will Vista play well with XP until he lets us upgrade the rest of our computers? 2) Will Vista run Office XP/2003 until we upgrade the rest of our computers? The boss wasn't going to let us upgrade until sometime next year. If her computer hadn't died, we wouldn't have been able to get hers now (we aren't 100% sure, but we think it may have got hit by lightning...our fax machine & the TV that our security cameras are hooked up to died too! and yes, we do have surge supressors and battery backups..they are APCs!) We thought about using a dual boot setup with Vista/XP until then, but if we don't have to...

Not sure what you mean by "Will Vista play well with XP", lots of people seem to have XP and Vista mixed in a Networking setup, I do myself and have not had too many problems.

See if these help you?

Upon further checking my computer, I need to make a change on the info...Our version is *NOT* Office XP - it is Office 2003! Grr...my computer is running Windows XP/Office 2003 and her new one is Windows Vista and it had Works on it. We've got to get Office for it. Sorry about that! Same criteria applies tho! Still need to know if Vista will run the Office 2003 - specifically Access 2003 databases until we get the rest of the computers upgraded to match. All of the stuff that I've been able to find talk about Word, Excel, etc...but none have made any mention of Access..That is my main program I need to know about. Thanks in advance

The Vista Compatibility Chart says this about Office 2003.

"Microsoft's web-based Office Update will not be supported under Vista; running Microsoft Update allows the user to obtain Office 2003 updates automatically".

It also says Office 2003 will run under Vista.

I've been doing more research and it looks like it will do what we need it to. Also, we have gotten it up and running thanks to a new computer tech guy we found. Our other computer guy, who originally built our old computers died of a heart attack about 3 weeks ago, that's why we've been so frantic lately! For right now, we are going to leave the Vista on the computer instead of either replacing it with XP or trying to set up a dual boot. So far, all of our software appears to be running ok..Believe it or not, even the office manager's Quickbooks '99 appears to be running except for a few minor glitches (the internal backup/restore won't work, but that can be easily handled by backing the database it creates up each time she uses it *outside* the program!) until she is ready to upgrade to Quickbooks 07. The only module of Quickbooks she uses is the accounting module anyway. Her payroll program appears to be working fine too.
