Vista Networking Issues with a new twist

This seems to be a recurring theme lately, But I think I have come up with a new twist in the formula.
I have a laptop running Vista Home Basic that I tried to connect to my workgroup at my office, to no avail. I could get internet just fine, but could not see any of the XP computers on the network at all. After much fiddling and trying "fixes" suggested in Microsoft's tech net forums, I finally got my desktop at the office to see my laptop, and vice versa, at least until I tried to access a shared folder on my Laptop from my Desktop. Then the whole thing came crashing down, and now absolutely nothing works at all.
Here's the wrinkle: Took my laptop home that night and set it up to access my workgroup at home (different Workgroup name, not standard MSHOME name, BTW; same for the office workgroup) and it came up like that. I could see and access all computers from laptop, and vice versa. Funny thing, on my Desktop at home I could laso see my office workgroup listed in the Microsoft Windows Network window (???), and guess what? My home desktop was listed in that workgroup as well as in the home workgroup (??? again), but none of the office computers were (Whew!) AND I could access my home desktop from the laptop thru the office workgroup window. Hmmm, don't about you guys, but somehow that just does not seem quite right to me.
Question 1: Does anybody know if the 2Wire DSL Router/Modems are compatible with Vista for networking (This is what we are using at our office)?
Question 2: If the answer to 1 is yes, then any ideas on what might be wrong with getting VIsta to see XP and vice versa? remember, I have tried all the standard fixes for this problem (DL Network discovery for the XP computers, Setting XP Computers up on NetBIOS so they can see each other consistantly, making sure Workgroup names are the same, Setting up identical accounts on each computer)

Check your router. Because of the new networking features in Windows Vista, some older network routers are not fully compatible with Windows Vista and can cause problems. You can test your router to see whether it is fully compatible with Windows Vista by running the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool. Or, for a list of routers that are compatible with Windows Vista, go to the Windows Vista Hardware Compatibility List website". See following article for links.

Troubleshoot network connection problems

Turning off any third party firewall for diagnostic purposes is not always effective as many of the settings are still being applied via the Registry. It is better to actually uninstall the firewall temporarily.
