I know net send is gone in vista but I can not get msg to work at all. msg simply does not do anything in Vista. If I try msg in Vista it takes a message and doesnt give any error but also doesnt send it anywhere as far as i can tell. According to another post I found, msg is included in XP. On my XP machine there is a msg command, but if you type msg and hit enter you get:

msg: syntax: msg errorspec ...

where errorspec is either a single errorcode or two errorcodes separated by a space. An errorcode may be entered either as three decimal numbers separated by commas, a decimal number suffixed with a period, or a hex number. For example, the following commands
are equivalent:
msg 126,0,103
msg 7e000067
msg 2113929319.

So, has anyone had any luck getting msg to work with Vista or XP?Or does anybody have any plans for how to handle network messages when they have to start adding Vista clients to their domains???

thanks for any replies or suggestions

sounds like something is wrong with your XP MSG, on my machine I get the usual "How To Use it"...

from the CLI (or Start >> RUN) type SFC /SCANNOW and have your XP cd at hand, as it will ask you when it needs it... This will check the systemfiles and replace them if they are corrupted...

it is suggested also that you run a CHKDSK /F first... to certify the integrity of the drive...

I have played around with MSG, but only in a small LAN, and not very successfully, probably because I was not in a Domain.

Here are some notes that I used in my experiments, maybe they will be useful to you?

Vista: Net Send is Gone; Use msg console Instead.

Msg

"Error 1722" error message when a program uses the NetUserGetLocalGroups function in Windows Server 2003

Access is denied when using MSG.exe
