Vista Multiple network problem 1

I have just installed Vista Ultimate on a Conmpaq presario that previously had XP Media on it.

I am connecting to the internet via a Linksys WGWRT54GS router.

On start-up I am unable to connec to the the internet because I am reportedly connected to multiple networks!

If I disable my network connection and then enable it again my internet connection is restored however as soon as I re-start the PC the same problem returns.

I have run IPconfig/all after start-up and after restoring the connection and posted the results below.

It would seem there is a problme with the default gateway adding "0.0.0.0" before the IP address when the pc is initially started!

I have hard wired direct to the PC rather than via the router, installed another network card, uninstalled the card and then re-istallled all of which made no difference.

I have also tried "route delete 0.0.0.0" then "ipconfig/renew" in DOS which fixed the problem until I restarted the PC and I was back to square one.

Anyone got any ideas?

Are you getting any clues from the Event Viewer?

Have you tried Vista's "Diagnose and Repair" from the Network and Sharing Center?

Under Manage Network Connections in the Network and Sharing Center, and also in Device Manager, how many Network Adaptors do you have listed? If you have more than one try disabling any that you don't use.

I already tried disabling IPv6 without sucess.

Network & sharing centre shows multiple networks

1) Network (private Network)
2) Unidentified network (Public Network)

After running diagnoise and repair I get a message stating that "there is more than one active network connection
on this compputer - unlug or disable one of the actrive connections to try to resolve this problem"

I received the following warning in the system event viewer

Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0018F362296F. The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user.. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Is there a second Network Adaptor in Device Manager that you can Disable, and/or is there a second LAN connection accessible via the LINK to "Manage Network Connections", on the left pane of Network and Sharing Center, which you could disable. After disabling any unused Network connections you can then test to see if the problem is resolved.

How did you go about disabling IPv6? By just clearing the check box next to it under network connection settings? Seems this doesn't fully disable IPv6, you may want to edit the registry as discussed at the bottom of this link (

to fully disable the feature. I doubt this will resolve the issue, but still may be worth a try. Also, see if either of these links below offer any help to the issue.

You could always assign your laptop with a static IP and Default Gateway and delete the 0.0.0.0 route to resolve the issue.

Can you tell us what error message you are seeing when you attempt to create the Registry Value?

I have created the DisabledComponents item in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters as follows:-

Name - DisabledComponents
Type - REG_DWORD
Data - 0x0000000 (0)

When i go into this entry I am able to change the value data filed which is set to 0

Other files showing in the parameters folder are_

Dhcpv6DUID
EnableICSIPv6 - Data value 0x00000000 (1)


Having created the disbledComponents file I re-booted and still have the same problem.

I don't see any 0 value in any of these lists (linked to earlier), such a data value might act like a double negative word meaning, in so far as you are saying "disable ipv6 - No". Have you tried the 0xFF data value?



The following table lists some common configuration combinations and the corresponding value of DisabledComponents.

The problme is i dont know where/how to update the 0xFF data value

When I try to modify the disbaledcompnents entry in the value data box i can not enter the value 0xff - i can enter 0 and i can enter ff but it wont let me enter x

The "x" just signifies that the value is a hexadecimal value. Enter FF in for the Value data and this is the equivalent to 0xFF. 0xFF is just hexadecimal for 255. You could also enter 255 in as a decimal value and get the same.

Was wondering if you still had the same problem??

IF so funny enough i have just duplicated the problem around a friends house. He had a small network of XP's and his main machine he upgraded to vista ultimate. It seems that during this process it has kept some details of the network. We had to repair the connection to get internet!!

Having read this thread previously, i was not going to sit around there all day and try to resolve it.

We did a fresh intall of Vista and the problem is no longer there.

How settled are you with Vista would you be able to do a fresh instal, sounds a drastic measure but it solved his problem..

FORMAT C seems to be the only think left to try, so I wiped the system thius morning and performed a clean install - hey presto no more connectin problem.
