My brother-in-law's laptop (Gateway model W6501)stopped recognizing his Optiarc DVDRW AD7563A ATA device. The Device Manager says Code 19. I've looked for the exact driver to reinstall. I get lists of drivers to download, but none are the exact number. I've tried uninstalling the device and restarting it, but I get an error message that says the install failed. I downloaded bio firmware and it would still not show up. I would appreciate help. I'm not professional and know little. My B-in-L is broke and needs his computer.

its a dead drive linney...I have replaced a bunch of them
he has to bring it to a laptop repair shop

firewolfrl,

You've lost me, not hard to do mind you. Are you saying that a dead hard drive is the reason he can't recognize the DVD drive?

I did go to the Microsoft Site. Thanks, I didn't know about Mr. Fixit even though I had tried searching microsoft.com. However, after doing it all, it still didn't work. So I went to the device manager, deleted the driver and restarted the computer. It came back saying that the install failed. I am at a loss, I'm beginning to think that the DVD/CD player is dead.
I appreciate both of you for helping me. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Only one other possibility I can think of, though it does sound like "it's dead, Jim." [wink]

The other thing is this: has he installed any new software before this occurred, especially any CD/DVD burning apps or media player apps, maybe?

lol,
have to clarify its a dead cd/dvd rom drive...you can pull the drive and get the model number and goggle it to replace it(I do this a lot) I find those drives have an exurbanite price and its cheaper to replace the computer sometimes. I shop around and sometimes I find the drive at a price range my client excepts

here is a workaround...though not a great one

get yourself an external DVD/CD USB drive
it will be in the same price range or cheaper then the replacement drive

Thank you, I will ask if he has installed any related software and look around for a drive. It is a laptop, and I've never tried to install any hardware in a laptop, so I guess I'll just advise him to get it repaired by a professional. I appreciate all your help. I couldn't get along without you all.
