Apologies if the wrong group. Hopefully it's not, but please feel free to point me in the direction of a more appropriate group if there is one.

I have just installed VirtualPC 2004 on Windows XP Pro, and at the end of the install I get an error message that says:-
The Virtual Machine Network Services Driver has failed to install. After installation, please reboot your machine and run Install.Bat located under the Utility directory of the MS VM installation directory. The VM network services driver will only be loaded if an ethernet or wireless network adapter is present in your physical machine.
Well, I've got one in my physical machine?? So I reboot and run Install.Bat. This runs successfully, but then when I launch VirtualPC, I get the following message:-
VirtualPC could not open the Virtual Machine Network Services Driver. Access to the external network and host will be unavailable to all virtual machines using virtual networking. Virtual machines will still be able to access other machines using virtual networking.

To fix this problem, re-enable the Virtual Machine Network Services driver on one or more ethernet adapters or reinstall VirtualPC.
I'm assuming this means that if I install Win98 and Win2K etc to virtual PCs, then I won't be able to access the internet. I've tried looking at the network adapter in Device manager, but it all seems to be OK, and i can't see any reference to a Virtual Machine Network Services driver anyway. Am I just missing something fundamental here?

Cheers

I think you have to click the check box in the Local Area Connection/ Properties and/or your ISP/ Properties and Install "Virtual Machine Network Services".

Thanks Bill/Linney - much appreciated on both counts :)

Hehehe -Just realised how daft I'd been trying to find the VM reference in the NIC properties from Device Manager. As soon as I went to the right bl$$dy place, ie into Network Connections and looked at properties of my NIC in there, bang, I could see the VM option not checked. Cheers again guys.

I am impressed by the MS Virtual PC 2004 product, but linney is not yet a convert. Perhaps if you or I pay for the beers next time whe can convince that cheap linney fellow.

LOL - Hi Bill - I'll like it even better when I get these nice MVP branded discs that just turned up in the mail loaded :)

Trying to load the LH Bld 4074, and it told me there was 14 minutes left for about 30 min, then 13 min for about 30 min....... - Still waiting. Believe it should be faster if I install VM additions, but I'll wait till I'm done with this install first.

I'd checked the ms newsgroups for a virtualpc one and didn't find anything, but after your pointer realised that I simply had to refresh the damn groups in OE, and then bingo. :)

Ken,

I hope noted:

. linney is now an MVP
. linney pays for the beers

I'm just "crook" (Aussy slang for upset) that it cost me $15 more than that "Bcastner" copy.
