Hi everyone,

I currently have one oprerating system on my computer, which is XP proffesional, I am trying to install another operating system which is Window 2000 proffesional, and run it with virtual PC. Please how do I start process, and make sure I don't mess anything up.

thanks

what do u mean? dont you just need to create a new virtual pc within the virtual pc software and then boot it up and make it read a boot cd? there isnt much to get messed up.

Installing Virtual PC 2004 is basically the same as installing any other piece of Software in XP. Make sure you have the Virtual PC SP1 and any other updates.

Once you have it installed, start Virtual PC and have your 2000 CD ready in the CD Drive. There is a CD tab across the top of Virtual PC where you can make sure your CD Drive is being used by Virtual PC. The CD will boot and you just install 2000.

After installing 2000, for proper running of your Virtual PC make sure you then install the Virtual PC Additions (via the File Menu). After this, update 2000 and proceed normally.

Read the Virtual PC Help File as there are some limitations in regards to USB and CD burning.

This is the top site for Virtual PC questions. It is run by Robert MOIR MS MVP and will quickly assist you with any problems.

Thank I did exactly what you guys but I recieved this message below, which made me not sure what to do next. that is I posted this message I thought I was not doing it right. Does this message mean anything.
Windows 2000 Professional Setup
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

Setup has determined that your computer's startup hard disk is new
or has been erased, or that your computer is running an operating
system that is incompatible with Windows 2000.

If the hard disk is new or has been erased, or if you want to discard
its current contents, you can choose to continue Setup.

If your computer is running an operating system that is incompatible
with Windows 2000, continuing Setup may damage or destroy the existing
operating system.

 To continue Setup, press C.
CAUTION: Any data currently on your computer's startup hard disk
will be lost.

 To quit Setup, press F3.

You want to continue, basically what Virtual PC does it setup a file on your existing hard drive that is the other PC's "hard drive".

not to sound stupid,

but it sounds like you are booting up with your windows 2000 on your REAL computer, not the virtual one.

You are using virtual PC, right? Its a black window that opens up on your windows xp desktop!

Virtual PC is totally isolated from your XP install and anything installed in Virtual PC is only able to interact with and through Virtual PC.

Windows XP is the Host operating system and would not allow 2000 to be installed over XP in any circumstances.

The only way 2000 could overwrite XP is if you were to boot the 2000 CD without having XP running and in that case you would not have Virtual PC running either.

It sounds like 2000 is asking you if it is OK to format the Virtual Hard Drive that you created in Virtual PC. This drive must be formatted before 2000 can be installed.

In any case, installing 2000 into Virtual PC cannot damage your XP Host operating system.
