For some reason XP is not keeping the virutal memory file size upon restart. xp is running on dll optiplex p4 256 mb , and it keeps resetting to 369 mb and as soon as you start running applications, it gives you the message that the virtual memory is set too low and it needs to be reset. So far I have deleted and recreated the swap file, resize it x1.5 min and double tha max; reset the permission where the page file is; started w/out the vm . but as soon as you restart defaults back to 369 min/max after giving you the message that it is set too low; I even check the local group policy as well and made sure that theres non other local rule that would affect this. still the message is there as soon as you restart and start runnign apps

XP on 256 physical RAM is very minimal. It app[ears that you are attempting to set your VM lower than '369MB' and XP w/256 is not liking your setting.

Is there a HD space problem that you are trying to mitigate?

Why are you setting your swap file so low? Why not let XP determine the size?

I am not setting the vm size below 369 and i did try xp to manage the swap file- still after reboot you get the same message- system vm too low
hd is 40gb with 30+ gb free space- no errors or issues
no matter what you set the vm file it defaults back to 369
when you look at the properties page it says that it is custom size 512mb , but under that it says that 369 is allocated and 369 is in use.

Well, something is clearly wrong with the 1.5x figure. Doing the math, that number should be 384MB.

Not sure what would cause that. This is the only thing I saw out on MS Support:

If that's not it, I'd recommend disabling all 3rd-party apps using msconfig, reboot, and see if the problem persists.

You are correct dunno why xp keeps defaulting to 369
I do not have norton i.s. I have Symantec Antivirus Enterprise Edition 10.0 accros the network.
thanks for the tip anyway

Hmmm... sounds like paging file corruption?
Try setting the page file sizes to 0.
Reboot in safe mode and delete the pagefile.sys (hidden in C:\ so you'll need to 'attrib' it first).
Then set it to whatever size you want and reboot again.
This will allow it to be recreated.

Deleting the page file was one of the first thing I did, but that did not help, it was working until the next restart and after that showed 369 again.

Did you try the msconfig suggestion of turning off all 3rd-party apps?

I'm assuming you have. At this point, it sounds like you have an infection, either spyware or virus related, that's eating your resources.

Here's an article I stumbled across:

Although not exactly like your problem, this guy did have a virus (Welchia) that causes system resources to drain fast. It's possible that you have some form or copycat version of this virus.

Suggestions:
1) Make sure Windows is fully patched
2) Virus defs are up-to-date
3) Do a complete antivirus scan in safe mode
4) Consider installing Windows from scratch on a spare hard drive or partition so see if the problem persists

try putting a size in multiples of 1024. paging is a binary operation: 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192,.....

Ok I have SAV 10 client up-to-date, pc is networked pc behind the firewall, plus I have antispyware up-to-date with sheduled weekly scannings ...I have tried putting the binary multiplying by 2 for min/max, and again after the restart displays the same message ....

The only option I haven't tried is installing the windows from scratch or reinstalling it- maybe that should be my next step...

Have you looked in the event viewer for any clues as to why windows reset the pagefile?
