Virtual Memory Errors & \Harddrive2\DR2 Errors

Since moving my nearly new hard drive from one system to another, it has been plagued with virtual memory errors. It is now set at 1500 and still gives the errors with the system becoming sluggish and even locking all together after a while. I think it might be some kind of file permissions problem due to a false start in trying to repair what I thought was a bad Windows2000 installation, rather than a true paging file problem. It is actually Windows 2000 Server. Can anyone advise of a solution?

Also, at bootup, I get a dozen of so errors:

"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddrive2\DR2"

with Harrddrive2 switching to Harddrive3 and DR2 switching to DR3 alternately with each error message. I have only a single harddrive, which boots right up after clicking "cancel" a dozen times. Any ideas?

Thanks. I haven't used QuickTime, especially not from external drives (I don't have any) but it is still a possibility to look into.

I get the virtual memory error every time I boot the system and in the course of running it, the mouse becomes sluggish and jerky. If I don't immediately stop whatever I'm doing, it will lock up and need to be forcably rebooted using the reset button. It actually locks up many times each day before I realize it's about to happen.

If you havent already, be sure to run chkdsk /r to eliminate any bad sectors.

are there any clues in the event viewer?

Yes, I did that already several times and the drive is clean. I know that there are some permissions problems due to a false start after changing over the drive from one computer to another, along with some IP issues, which are probably due to my DSL going up and down all day. One such error is:

Code:
The DNS proxy agent was unable to bind to the IP address 192.168.0.1. This error may indicate a problem with TCP/IP networking. The data is the error code.

and other is

Code:
The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{DFDAB46C-BC99-449D-BA3E-B1EA2F095888} because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start.

which wasn't there the last time I looked. There is only one computer running right now so it makes no sense, but I don't think these are related to the problems at hand.

Good advice and something I didn't think of trying but there are no ghosted entries for network adapters. It shows only the two that are installed in the system. I ran the Windows repair several times already, which is when the problem began.

As far as moving the hard drive, the deed is done but I'll look through to see if there was something that I didn't do. Actually, it wasn't the move itself that started the prblem but rather, it was the unceremonious way in which the old system failed during bootup that corrupted part of the drive. Chksdk fixed it but it left the drive unbootable. The Windows repair process, which was run several times, wouldn't fix it so I finally resorted to a boot floppy process, but the whole job left permission messed up and I probably didn't help matters by messing with them even more.

The DR2 errors are gone now thanks to the help here. I hadn't noticed that the error was on cisvc.exe which I haven't yet researched to see what it is due to the DSL issues today.

The Microsoft Index Service Helper (cisvc.exe) monitors the memory usage of Microsoft Indexing Service (cidaemon.exe) and automatically restarts cidaemon.exe if it uses more than 40Mb of memory.

Note: there is a keylogger with the same name. Test: Hold down Ctrl-Alt-Shift and hit K. If an icon appears in the system tray it is a keylogger.

Thanks to all who have send tips so far.

The Virtual Memory panel recommends 718 MB but I have it currently set with the initial size of 1500 MB and the maximum at 4095 MB. I noticed that no matter how high the maximum is, I get virtual memory errors when booting if the minumum isn't set high. With the minimum set to 1500 MB, it shows that 1500 MB is currently allocated but I am not sure if this is normal or not, or if it's actually using even more.

Unfortunately it still becomes sluggish and locks up in short order before I can follow through on any of the links that people are kindly sending. Can anyone encapsulate something to try here in this forum without sending more links?

Your virtual memory and other errors are all symptoms of a hard drive moved to a different motherboard.

Do a repair in-place upgrade installation so that the proper IDE drivers are installed for the new motherboard.

It locked again right after I posted so I wasn't sure my posting was even sent.

I already did all that you suggested several times before posting here originally, and I installed the proper drivers that came with the new system. I'm not sure what other drivers it might need. I guess there's nothing to lose to try again, though.

The DR2 errors are gone, but neither the old nor the new system had more than the single drive so the error made no sense. I have a card reader but it has always been connected to a different system.

You may have installed motherboard drivers, but the fact remains at the point of installation on the hard drive the hard drive was in a different hardware setting. Nothing you have done with the motherboard drivers changes the fact that many aspects of your system were configured at installation by Win2000.

Do a reinstall so that Win2k can reconcile its registry and the drivers used with your new hardware setting.

After slipstreaming an SP4 installation disk, then running the in-place upgrade process, the system is no better than it was and had a virtual memory error waiting for me on bootup. The in-place upgrade took a long, long time and seemed to check just about everything so I am very surprised that the problem is still there. I can't even get to the browser now without it locking up so am using a dialup on an old laptop for additional help. Any ideas?

1. Download and install subinacl from:

2. Create a file named reset.cmd in C:\Program Files\Windows ResourceKits\Tools folder.

3. Edit the reset.cmd file with the following content.

subinacl /subdirectories %
SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

4. Enter into CMD prompt.

5. Enter the following commands one at a time and click Enter.

cd\
cd "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
reset.cmd

6. After a few minutes by processing, and the cmd session is completed, do a reboot.

Now edit the pagefile:

. set Min and Max to 0 and apply. Reboot and ignore messages.
. set to Windows managed size and apply

Thanks, I think that's on the right track. However, the reset.cmd gives an error. I think it should be %SystemDrive% rather than SystemDrive% shouldn't it? Either way, though, I gives a syntax error and I can't seem to stay on long enough to see what's wrong. It had three lockups just getting to this posting!

SubInAcl version 5.2.3790.1180

Invalid Argument !
Use :
SubInacl /help to get the usage information
or
SubInAcl /help syntax to understand SubInAcl syntax.

I see that it was a wrapping error here in the posting. With it fixed in reset.cmd, it seems to still give the syntax error but it also appears to do more. However, it seems to be changing only the folders in the Tools folder rather than those on the rest of the drive.
