Virtual Machine Problem? ActiveX? Java? HELP!

Web pages open with many banners blocked out, with part of the message "Page cannot be displayed" and some advice to check settings - but i don't know which ones and the advice is chopped off. It's weird.

What do you think? Security settings? I tried default - no luck. One of the security zones off? or some other program like activeX or Virtual Machine or Java or some other?

I have Norton System Works 2002 but i don't have any ad-blocker programs running.
I would really appreciate some help on this. thx

do a search for it...seems to very good at fixing alot of problems in IE

Post back with the following information about your system:

- version of Windows
- version of the browser (IE 5.0, IE 5.5, etc)
- Do you use a firewall? If so, what's the brand & version?
- Are you on a network, broadband connection like DSL, or is it dial-up?

Run these two tests:
1) Go to

http://www.verisign.com

and click the "Secure Site" icon in the lower-right corner of the page. If the popup says "Page Cannot Be Displayed", then go on to the next step.
2) Go to "Help -> About Internet Explorer" at the top in your toolbar. What does the cipher strength say?

Tried the Verisign, pop-up was fine, but on the homepage the last (bottom) box under Enterprise, Small/medium and Personal, all three, was blank with a red 'x' in upper L hand corner. R click on it and 'show picture' didn't work.
I think this is related to the banners that say "Page cannot be displayed at this time" - they both started about the same time.

Sorry for the lack of this data:
Win98 orig ver with all patches etc up-to-date
IE 5.5 SP2 up-to-date
Zone Alarm free ver 3.7.143, no ad-blocker found in this ver
Dial-up connection

Other ideas? should i check virtual machine or scripting or activeX? if so, how? Or any other suggestions ...

PS: Elsewhere re: another matter i saw reference to "WINDOWS SCRIPTING HOST" being "broken" ... whatever that means... might that be relevant here?

Try shutting down Zonealarm altogether as a quick test. Make sure you close and restart IE afterwards.

If you still have the problem, then it sounds like it could be either Java or ActiveX. You can check to see what version of the Java Virtual Machine you're running by:

1) Start -> Run, type command and hit OK
2) Type jview and hit enter
3) The first line that starts with "Microsoft Command-Line Loader" should tell you the version of Java - 5.00.XXXX

Also, did you check the cipher strength under Help -> About to see if it was 128-bit?

java ver is 5.00.3810 ....

Mikl,
Those three boxes that had a red X on Verisign's site are just regular bitmap pictures. However, each one uses an address of ad.doubleclick.net, which is commonly blocked by ad-blockers. Are you 100% positive that you're not using any ad-blocker software in the background. I see no other reason why these pictures wouldn't display. Check your ADD/REMOVE Programs list carefully.

Also, you forgot to answer whether shutting down Zonealarm and restarting IE makes a difference - just temporarily.

Finally, I don't think it has anything to do with ActiveX. You stated that you already tried the default security setting in IE, which would enable any ActiveX scripts that you would need.

Have you used Spybot's Immunize function? This will cause the behavior that you're seeing.

i'll check for adblockers and try shutting down Zone Alarm for a trial ... appreciate your help.

I do run Mailwasher for OE but would't think that its blacklist would be a problem on IE. Guess i'll check the blacklist to make sure that ad.doubleclick.net isn't on it ...
Guess the main thing to do is to shut down ZA and see ...

PS - do you know what &quot;Windowws Scripting Host&quot; is?

Symantec is saying that is the cause of a different problem (Naturally it's not a Symantec problem <smile>) .

For them I've made sure that ActiveX and Java are set the way they told me to be, to be able to run on-line Virus Scan, but it still won't run and they claim Windows Script Host may be the cause ...
