Here is my problem,
i have a IBM laptop (an old one) with no serial port, we want to connect a palm (with a serial port) to it, so we purchased a USB to Serial converter, we installed it, and we could see it as a port 5
Now when we tried to install the Palm device, it only shows shows ports from 1 to 4 and i can't see port 5 in the installation menu,

is there anyway i could change Port 5 to port 3 or 4 ?

or is there anyway around this ?

thanks

This is probably not going to work well... If at all.
You might wind up having to go buy the USB cradle (I'm with you though, the serial cradles are more consistent with hotsyncs).

What OS?

Thanks for the reply Matt
its windows 98 SE
See, i almost got it to work, but its just the Synch program doesn't allow us to see anything after port 4
and the USB took Port 5, such a bad luck i guess

i know in windows xp , you could change the port #, not sure if you could do that with windows 98, using regestry or something

any other work around ?

Is there a utility associated with this adapter where you can change the port, or did windows automatically assign it to this port?

Wait a mintue... No serial port. Do you have a modem that you use? If so, what COM port is that on? What COM ports appear in device manager?

If there are ports in device manager that you aren't using, remove them, restart the laptop and enter its cmos setup, see if there are serial ports you can disable there (I know it sounds funny, but perhaps you have a bios that is similar or the same as other ibm motherboards that were made back then. They might have included serial ports, even though they don't physically exist).
