I have two Window 2000 server. One of them being the PDC and the other a file server. The file server is on the same domain.

My clients are all Window 98 and they can view the PDC shared folder, but can not see the share folder on the file server. I can see the file server but when I click on it, I get a popup asking for a password for IPC$. When I type in the password it gives me a failed message.

Now from my PDC, I can see the File Server shared folder and resources. From the File Server, I am able to see all the resources on the network.

I am not sure where to start to look for the problem. I've even set the folder permission to Everyone for both the shared and physical property. I have a feeling it may have not properly joined the network.

Any help in finding a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian [pc]

Thanks for your response and recommendation. I am assuming this is a necessary program on the Win98 machine. I am just wondering why the regular Win98 can see the shared folder on the PDC and not the File server. Any explanation would be greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again for everything.
Brian

Try the following and see what you get from it:
1) From CMD type the following:
net view \\NAME_OF_FILESERVER

2) From Start-> Run type the following:
\\NAME_OF_FILESERVER

BTW, how many NIC card do you have on your PDC??

It sounds like you Windows 98 machines have not been AUTHENTICATED to the domain properly.

It sounds like you have network connectivity. The IPC$ means the server does not know who you are...

You have to configure the Windows98 Client for Microsoft network to log onto your Windows domain.

Regarding NIC card, I have two. But one of them is disable at the moment.

A possible reason as to why the 98 client can see the PDC but not the other server...

(Assuming the client machine is not logged onto the domain properly)

But the user id and password used to log onto the 98 machine also exists on the PDC. For example, if I log onto the 98 machine as JSMITH with the password of jsmithpassword....and the user account JSMITH is valid with the same password on the domain, I believe that you would be able to see the share on the PDC.

But if the User account isn't created on the other server, this same user will get the IPC$ when trying to connect to this server.

(Also check to see if the GUEST accounts are enabled on the servers...you probably would want to turn this off.)

Thank you for all your recommendation and suggestion. I ended up installing active directory on the file server and made it a domain controller. Now everyone is able to see the computer and the shared folder.

I guess I have more to learn about Window2000 [bigsmile]
