I have set the deleted item retention for 30 on Exchange 5.5. I assume that this means items that users delete out of their deleted items folder are kept on the server rather than being dumped from the database altogether.

Thing is, how do you go about retrieving them? I want to view a deleted item, but I don't know if I need to restore the item or if I can just view it on the server.

In outlook, Under Tools, there's a Recover Deleted Items option. Sounds like that's what you need. Marc Creviere

Side note: Have your deleted items folder open when you try that. Marc Creviere

You have to do that on the client's PC where the mail was deleted, and you cannot view the mail, only the subject, who it was from and the size of it. If you choose the Recover Deleted Items option and it doesnt work, you may have to go to the reg and add the following key on the clients machine...
If you are using Exchange in your office with a mailbox, you have to go into the registry. Please be careful in here!! To get in, go to Start->Run and type regedit
Then in the left pane of the window, navigate to the following folder...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options
And then in the right hand side, right click and select, New->DWORD Value and give it a name of DumpsterAlwaysOn with a value of 1
Restart Outlook and click on Tools->Recover Deleted Itmes to get the Recovery window I mentioned above.....

Thanks for the assist. The problem was that I was using Outlook 97 for the client, and it doesn't appear to have a recovery tool. Found it in Outlook 2000 without a problem.
