Can neither see files nor view all file details in file manager. Have followed Windows 98 help instructions but that did not work.

Not sure what steps you followed-
Have you done
My Computer/View tab/Details ?

If you go through several levels of folders, you have to redo this at the specific level you want to see.

For example, if you go to c:\windows and do
view/details you will see a list of files and the details.
If you then click on the temporary internet files folder and enter it, you will not see a detailed file list until you repeat the view/details step within that folder.

When you have the detail view, you can click on the heading for a particular column to sort the list by that column.

If you need to see hidden files, go to my computer/view/folderoptions/view and then check the box show all files.

Hope this helps.

Update your antivirus program with the latest files, and check for a virus.
If none, then d/l Ad-aware or Spybot, and remove all spyware.
If that does not help, and the problem happened within the last 5 days, then press and hold the Ctrl key during startup, select 'Command prompt only', press Enter, at the C:\> prompt type scanreg /restore, press Enter, select a Registry with a date that precedes the problem, and press Enter.
If that does not work or if the problem happened more than 5 days ago, then try reinstalling Windows over itself.
If still no good, then back up all critical files, reformat the HD, and reinstall Windows.

I have had the same problem with viewing details.

When I open "my computer" the name, file type, and size are there, but when I go into any of the drives or folders past this area, only the file names are displayed. When I go to the view menu and select the details option, the entire window goes blank. At the bottom of the window it still lists how many files are there, but I can't see them.

Until yesterday, all of the detail information was available.

The only information I could find at microsoft suggested deleting the explorer bar value in an "Internet Explorer" folder using the Registry Editor program. Maybe they have confused "Windows Explorer" with "Internet explorer?"

Any ideas?

Ski,

Thanks for your help. Restoring the old registry from a few days back solved the problem.
