Hi,

I have a folder full of video clips of various types (divx, mpeg, avi etc) and for the past few days, the thumbnail image for the files is not displaying for most of them. Some still are though for some reason.

Any ideas what's happened ?

Cheers

Try switching the folder view to "details", then delete any files named "thumbs.db". Then try changing the folder view back to "thumbnail".

Have you installed any new media software? This can affect the icons.

Tried the thumbs.db and nothing altered.
Nothing new installed recently that I can say may have caused the thumbnails not to show. Strange how some do but most dont ?.....

From Start, Run, see if reregistering this .dll helps?
regsvr32 Shimgvw.dll

Have the files been Compressed, perhaps by running Disk Cleanup?

Image does not appear in thumbnail view after removing Office

Have you tried moving the image folder up a few levels closer to the root of the drive to see if that may fix the problem. Sometime funny things may happen when the folder is more than 8 levels deep.
This behavior might occur if the image folder is several layers deep from the root; for example:
C:\My Documents\CorpWebs\DivWebs\SectionWebs\GroupWebs\My Web

Thanks for the useful lniks there Linney, but I'm affraid it hasn't worked. The folder containing the video files is only 2 levels from root and it's not compressed.
Still only a dozen or so thumbnails show ?

Thanks again

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?). Try Normal Mode but as a different User.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
