video/file size question

Hello and how is it going...

I capture over a camcorder a video on the computer. The software and device i use called "dazzle video capture". It is not that bad, did cost $200.

When i save and render the captured file as avi then the file size will be about 2 GB (about 1 hr video).

Question:

1.How much GB/KB is a regular file. I'm new in it so i was wondering if 2 GB is normal for a video file which take 1 hr. and has a size of 350/250 or so.

2.If i import the file into Adobe Premiere and work on it and export it again.. it say "time remaining: 10hrs: Is it normal that the rendering/export process take a long time?

I have a Intel Celeron Proccesor 2.6 GHz, 640 MB RAM, XP and 40 GB harddrive. Is that system good enough or do i need a Intel Pentium??

3.The use is Online on a web site But no streaming web server there!! so i need to export as realplayer, quicktime, or windows media file and no streaming setting.

What is the best setting to get a good result? I'm not talking about.. save for 56K, DSL or Kable.. I'm talking about when they ask what kind of compressing i want to use or what kind of audio setting i want to use for export.

Just give me some advice how u would export for the web, without having a streaming webserver. Just a advice for Windows media would be cool,.. maybe quicktime too

I'm starting with that stuff and i need some basic about which setting is good and what should i not use for video on Web.

Hmm, that's a little small. What are your capturing settings?

Actually that is quite small if its AVI ( DV avi as well ). Uncompressed AVI is 10 megs / sec of video at 720 x 480 resolution with full uncompressed audio. DV AVI is about 3/4 that size (depedning on settings)

If you can give me the exact model fo Dazzle you are using, I cna pretty much tell you what is "right/wrong" with it (as far as capturing goes). I have used most of their products, starting from their Parallel Port version to their USB version, to thei DVC II and now Im on hollywood bridge.

You shouldn't have any problems importing what you've captured into Premiere.

But , agian, depending on your settings (you should provide these details as well ) and how much footage you're working with, that can determine how long rendering it takes (so what's your project settings?)

Celeron.....evilll.. IMHO, you should be doing Video Editing on nothing less than Pentium 4/3 system or the equivalent Atholong. Your speed is good, but you may want to bump your RAM up to a about 1 GB. Could do with a bigger hard drive, *but again, IMHO*

Yup, unless you have a server that can stream, you are stuck with non=streaming versions of your file. That means the end users must download the entire movie before seeing it. You should check with your webhost about any streaming video features they offer.

depdning on the project and the end use of the file
If yu're doing your own homve movies or archiving movies et,c then you want to capture at the best possible quality.

If for web, then you can sacrifice qualiy so you end up with speed.

Et.c Etc.

Rendre out your video at nothing bigger than 352 x 240. You can bump down your frame rate to 24 fPS or even 12 fps. You dont need stereo on your audio; mono is perfect enough unless y're doing high quality trailers like trailers at Quicktime's website.

Use codecs that give you good enough quality at low file sizes ( ie DIVX for AVI and Cinepak or Sorenson for MOV )

then you are not capturing in AVI, You are capturing in MPEG2 or Mpeg 1. The DVC II, I owned never was able to capture in AVI and you could only use their MovieStar program to capture from. No support for Adobe Premiere capturing. Why I swtiched to Hollywood Bridge.


Hollywood Bridge is their DV capture system. That means you can capture through Fire Wire instead of installing something in your compputer. It also means capturing in DV AVI. Highest quality AVI for a "smaller" sized avi than uncompressed.

Codecs? Its "compression" formats to make movie files smaller in size

I have a edited video, Premiere 6.0, Photoshop 7.o, and so on.
The result is that: soon as the Video start to play, you will see a jpg image with logo and images, after a time the video start 2 play. I want to put a gif ofer the video layer so that in the blank (alpha) area u will see the video and the rest will be covered with the gif.

It's a chuch video and i want to put under the video or over the video a bottom frame with the church name on it.

How can i make the transparent area of the gif "transparent"? If i import the gif in premiere then the transparent area will show up as a black area. nothing transparent at all. what files support premiere? gif, png, jpg, tiff .. and what should be the resolution of the image.. like 96 dpi, 72, dpi, 300 dpi or more ??

Hollywood bridge.... how can i get that? nad what else do i need to get everything over hollywood bridge straight into premiere.

I go straight from the Cam via USB into the movie star software and edit it later under premiere.

what would be a a better way? what do i need to run everything better?

^_^ You can use it in any program that allows it to be recognized. Premiere is one of them ( shows up as a DV camera ) and Ulead's Media Studio pro does as well. I've also used with Video Studio 7; and Pinnacles DV Express. Even the Freeware VirtualDub recognizes it.

I suggest that you do not use JPG or GIF in your production because they are already compressed file formats. If you want to retain quality of your still images, save them as BMP's or PNG files. They are lossless formats so they retain their quality.

As for what you are describing, im not sure, but im guessing that on VIDEO track A you have some footage that is smaller in dimension (or to be resied to smaller than) than the video on track b? that would take some mastering of premiere's filters.

Use PNG on a transparent background. And anything that is supposed to be transparent will be "transparent".

Is my thinking right or do i need to have other software to do all the animation like on TV. I'm talking about like .. circle lines moving from one side to another and stuff like that over a movie or image.

Does the dpi i playe a big role at video production? The higher the dpi the better, i know that. Do i need to think at file size too or is that on 2nd place? How much info can a DVD store ?

You can do it that way, and it take longer to render; or do what they do and use a buddy program called Adobe After Effects. Many of the "fancy animating graphics" you see are done via After Effects or a titling machine.

Correctomundo. You need a seperate software.

Actually you'd be surprised at the quality a 72 dpi file sitll image can look on a tv screen. There isn't much difference. Only to the trained eye, they would see something different.

Do i need to think at file size too or is that on 2nd place?


clips, images and such that YOU use to put together a movie has no say in how big the movie file will end up after you render it. a 300,000 meg avi file, under a diffreent compression in rendering can end up only contributing to 2% of the end results file size. Depending on what you do and your settings.

How much info can a DVD store ?

4.3 GB of infomation
3.9 if you plan on doing a "DVd" that you can play in your set-top (the dvd authoring programs will need the extra space to add for menus and chapter creations )

Can't import? funny, I import them all the time. Make sure your drop down list is set to ALL files and not just "all supported files"

Permiere will ask you what layer to use or to flatten the image; just pick the layer or answer no; that maybe the step you're stuck at.

i recorded a video last night without audio. I will add the audio wich is recorded extra later on. the file size is about 2 GB, kinda small. If i export it, it takes about 5- 13 hrs dep. on the setting. is there a lot difference between working on a MAC and PENTIUM or a CELLERON? (speed)?

Many of the 'addins" you want for premiere or after effects are usually commercial in origin. so you'd have to visit their 3rd party developers to get anything you want to add to premiere
