Ok a little technical info first.
Asus P5GD2 Mobo
Intel 3.0 Ghz 800mhz with 1mb cache
40 GB hd.
1 Gb of DDR2 ram
fresh install of XP.
Latest Nvidia drivers from Nvidia.
Geforce6 6600DV 256mb PCI-Express video card.

The problem:
Windows runs normally, video installs with out a hitch. Now when I attempt to run a game that requires 3D rendering the system locks up solid. I have to power down to get it to restart.

Update your Direct X if you haven't already. your 256mb video should use the most updated direct x available.

Click START>RUN>dxdiag

This will put your Direct X through some tests to see what might be wrong.

yup.. directx 9.0c dxdiag tells me everything is ok. However I still have the same problem. It only seems to crash when changings video modes.

Have you checked event viewer to see if there might be a clue as to what is causing the crash. Application or hardware????

Start -> Program Files -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

In case you didn't know where it was located. Also, do you have the newest drivers installed? Are they stable release? Maybe you should try uninstalling the video drivers and reinstalling.
