What do I do if I have a machine that is certified compatible with Win2000 but still doesn't work?

In this particular case I have a Fujitsu Siemens Liteline LFL which is listed on microsoft.com as being compatible, with the caveat that all the latest drivers are installed. I therefore found the LFL Win2000 display driver on the fujitsu-siemens support site and installed it. Now the laptop boots to the desktop in lovely 32-bit colour, but the shell doesn't load. All is fine when using the standard VGA driver, aside from the fact that there are only 256 colours with a 640x480 resolution.

So having followed the OEM instructions (i.e. MS and FS) what steps do I take now?

Jibber,

Try this:

1.) Boot up the unit, and hit the "F8" key, when the choce shows at the bottom of the screen.
2.) From the "Boot Options Menu", choose "Safe Mode".
3.) Once in Safe Mode, right click the "My Computer" icon, and select the Hardware tab.
4.) Click Device Manager.
5.) Expand the category for "Display".
6.) Remove ALL instances of display adaptors listed.
7.) Reboot as normal, and expect WIndows to prompt you for the location of the driver for the "New Hardware Found" dialogue.
8.) If Windows doesn't prompt, and loads the wrong driver automatically, you should be able to return to device manager, right click the display adaptor that Windows loaded, and choose properties, driver, then change driver.
9.) Point the Update Wizard to the folder where yo uexpanded the driver from the manufacturers site...that should do it.

Caveat: Some display manufacturers require that a "Standard SVGA" driver be installed prior to upgrading to the "new" driver. If that's the case, follow the same steps, but choose to show "Compatible" drivers, and pick SVGS from the "Standard" category, reboot, then update the driver again, to the manufactiurers driver.
