The Visual FoxPro 9.0 upgrade version will install for the same earlier versions as VFP 8 did, that is, as far back as VFP 5 or Visual Studio 97 (Professional or Enterprise). See
I saw this article at which said that the EULA for VFP 7 and other, earlier software includes this sentence: "A Software Product labeled as an upgrade replaces and/or supplements the product that formed the basis for your eligibility for the upgrade."

Starting with VFP 8 and other MS products, the EULA specifically stated "Upgrades. To use a version of the Software identified as an upgrade, you must first be licensed for the software identified by Microsoft as eligible for the upgrade. After upgrading, you may no longer use the software that formed the basis for your upgrade eligibility."

The article concluded, "Should you upgrade to VFP 8, buy a full version of VFP 8, or buy MSDN? If you're using more than one Microsoft developer product, the answer is simple: MSDN is cheaper. If you develop only in VFP, it's a harder call."

A later article said this about VFP 9 at "One important product-related question arose. When VFP 8 came out, many developers were disappointed to discover that buying an upgrade version meant you had to uninstall VFP 7 (or whatever version you used for the upgrade) before installing VFP 8. (See my column in the June 2003 issue.) Ken Levy said this will not be required for VFP 9. Even if you buy an upgrade, you'll be able to run the new and old versions side by side."

In my case, I don't care about trying to run older VFP versions and so don't need multiple installations, but posted the above as the results of my internet searches.

And a nice aspect of switching from 8 to 9 is that 9 is 100-percent compatible with anything written in 8. Like turnng out a switch in one room and turning on a switch in another room.

One place to check is Another especially if you use more MS developer tools, is to consider an MSDN subscription.

I got my VFP 9.0 from cdw.com but their prices, even for the discounted business account, was about $10 higher than ProVantage.com.

Did you see that Microsoft has a $50 rebate offer good to August 15, 2005? Don't delay, because qualifying coupons must be received within 30 days of purchase! And limit one per household? Hey, how many homeowners are going to buy VFP??? What about businesses?

This page says "Visual FoxPro Upgrade has a Microsoft $50.00 Mail-in Rebate." But I clicked on the link and looked at the rebate form and it doesn't say the rebate is restricted to upgrades.

VFP 9 is best thing to happend for VFP programmers EVER.

I LOVE IT!!!

So another saga of FoxPro has come to pass. Microsoft has once again pulled another rabbit out of the hat. Leading us all along the primrose path of our desire. FoxPro being our desire and money being Microsoft's. We have a happy marriage do we not? Bill and associates will continue the saga if we provide x dollars of demand. So do not fret about when it will die, as long as we continue to pay up, MS will keep the carrot dangling before our eyes. Yes 1 or 2 years from now, you will have another bright shiny package to open and feel the excitement as the 10 year old boy hacking a 4k program on his TRS-80 model I Level I from yester years. I received mine and yes I was excited too. Yet I still have not used many of the features of previous versions... Let it end with this, long live programming in FoxPro!

Not sure how long this thread will last once I post this but here goes....

Another thread started discussed where to buy and how much was the VisFox version 9 professional edition. Myself and a few others have been very fortunate enough to get hold of an academic version priced at only £89 (which is about $147) (No manuals with the software).

The problem was as soon as the details were posted the management team at Tek-Tips pulled the plug. I can understand this as a few names and places were shown.

By the way, the version is fully legal but being an "Acadeic version" it has its end-user restrictions. Some of our colleagues and friends posted the fact the decription of "Academic use" has quite a wide meaning such as "Training" and "consultation" etc....

Whilst I dont want to get into the legal side of things, in view of what Rob posted....

I thought the above would be worth a mention. If you need to know more, you know where to look.

Good luck

The problem with buying the academic version is that it does not provide Microsoft with the head count of actual fully fledged developers. Remember that Microsoft watches carefully how many are purchased of the full and upgrade versions. I am almost certain they won't pay much attention to statistics on academic versions. Its all about money. Sure paying $100 less saves you now but look down the road. If we all decided to save $100 not to mention the license issues, we could be cutting our own throats. Show your full support for FoxPro and we shall live on in doing what we love. Heck people will slap down $300 for a portable playstation. Pay for what you love and love paying for it. If it means cutting out an extra soda pop each day, then do it for the Fox!!!

Hi Rob

If it means cutting out an extra soda pop each day, then do it for the Fox!!!
I have always purchased full versions of VisFox (and FoxPro for DOS!) and fully agree with what you say.

Wouldn't you agree though that if you fall into the category that allows you to buy the academic version and own a registered version (rather than a copied one which does kick in the teeth for the hoenst ones), then why pay in excess?

What do you think Rob?

Here is the bottom line for those qualifying for purchase of academic versions:
What is Academic?
Academic products have the same functionality as non-academic products. The difference is in the License. This product is not to be used outside an educational environment.
Ethics are a matter of personal choice. Accountability is a matter of outside choice. My comments are not meant to come down on or discourage. Merely to provide information. Take care and have a great day!

So we're in the process of getting a PO to purchase VFP 9.
We are currently running VFP 7, so we qualify for the upgrade. We do however, need more copies of VFP 9 than we currently have of VFP 7 (we have more programmers now).
My question is, is the VFP 9 upgrade package any different as far as the install goes, than the full version? I.e., does it look for an install of a prior version before it installs the new version?
The reasoning behind this is that I would like to only buy the upgrade media, and only puchase additional licenses for the remaining developers.

That should be fine. AFAIK, the only difference between the upgrade and the full is the price.

Tamar

Not that anyone cares but when you use the upgrade version you are supposed to stop using the previous version which the upgrade applies to. However when you purchase the full version you would have rights to use either. Its all a matter of $$$$ and MS loves people with ethics. Loves to stick em for every penny they can get.

I care, I have a couple ethics left [smile].
My only contention is that I don't want to pay for packaging and media if I don't need to. I don't mind shelling out the $$'s for licenses, especially if I get a price break.

Rob - that was true for VFP 8 only, not for earlier versions and not for VFP 9. They changed the license language.
