We have a windows 2000 server running sql server 2000 which houses various databases. This has been working fine for ages however recently we've had some very strange things happening.

For the front ends connecting to the server, the connections seems to be getting dropped. This doesn't happen regularly but it seems like if there is no action on the connection, then the connection just closes and doesn't get opened up again.

anyone have any ideas of what's going on?

Thanks

Has any network items changed recently? DNS? IP Address of the Server? Firewall things (i.e., port closings, etc.) or Foundary issues?

If you or your network team has a network sniffer, I'd recommend using that to troubleshoot the connection issues. Also, use the Network counters in Performance Monitor on the Server to see if they tell you anything.

managed to track down the problem to the link to the server dropping out at intervals between 3-5 mins. However the strange thing is, the link is almost getting re-established immediately...

now it just a case of trying to figure out why the link to the server is doing this...

Thanks...

Line noise, perhaps? Denial of Service attacks, perhaps?
