Very slow Visual Studio.net Startup 2

Hi,

When I start up my VS.net on my "carry around laptop", it starts up very quickly if I am not connected to a network; much, much slower if I am connected.

By "not connected" I mean no cable connection AND no wireless card.

Can anyone explain why I get this large delay, and if there is anything I can do to reduce this delay if I am connected to a network. Most of my development is done on the laptop, which includes a running local SQL Server, and generally I am happy not to have any active non local connections.

Any advise on this would be appreciated,

You could try disabling the start page that opens by default, that thing hit's the internet to get news and whatnot from MS.

What you say is a good idea, but unfortunately didnt do the trick. I used tools, options menu to show an empty environment, but that made no difference; still frustrating delay, unless I pull the network connection; then there is no delay at all to load.

Any other ideas would still be appreciated.

You might want to try a port sniffer, see what is trying to 'phone home' when you start VS. That might give you some insight on the source.

is excellent and free.

Just don't get caught running it on a corporate network, it's usually considered a security violation.

Mike,

This article says nothing about startup performance (as a sympton) and is about 'certificate funcitionality'. Before I try that registry change, can you please confirm that it is the relevant article. I am using XP Professional.
