Upon booting system is fast and may stay that way for a long time. It may also slow to a crawl almost immediately. A process viewer shows no unexpected processes running. However, when crawling msgsrv32 is using 60 to 80% of the CPU cycles and it has a single thread with one very active module: MPR.EXE.

Other processes will in turn become very active but the CPU will not go idle. Virus and trojan scans come up empty.

This system was working without problems until I whacked my Windows directory and had to reinstall windows (after erasing the DIR).

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I have been fighting this problem for a week.

Download and install the latest Windows updates, system device updates, hardware updates, etc.

If you're using antivirus software, update it as well.

If the problems persist after these steps, first download and install the latest drivers related to the hard drive controller. Then, reboot into Safe Mode, and open Device Manager. Look for any "ghost" devices (identical devices which appear more than once) and remove them. Look for any old devices (devices no longer physically installed in the computer) and remove those as well.

Reboot, and allow Windows to reconfigure the hard drive controller components. Then, if prompted to restart, do so again and see if the situation improves.

Thanks Zoplax for the suggestion. My problem was a couple of devices that were recognized when booting but didn't have drivers. Once I installed the proper drivers (a sound card and a PCI parallel port) my system returned to normal.

I had ignored those devices because I thought the OS would ignore them. Also, I had tried removing them via the device manager but that had not resolved the problem.

Thanks again for your reply
