Well, my ethernet card seems to be acting strangely. I can ping IP addresses, I can see SMB shares, as well as sharing stuff myself, but when I try to telnet or ftp a host, I can't, gives me something about "socket" errors. I have checked my DNS servers, and they are OK, so I am kind of wondering what could cause this problem? Cannot go to webpages, cannot connect to hosts, except through already valid SMB shares... very weird. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and connections. Very stumped.

Sys Spec:
ECS K7S5A mobo w/onboard LAN
xp 2000+
1gb DDR RAM
40 GB ATA/100
nvidia geforce 4 video
sound blaster audigy.

any help would be appreciated. The weevil of doooooooooom

First suggestion is to check for spyware, download Adaware and do a full system scan

Make sure you can ping the DNS server and you aren't running a proxy client.

Can ping DNS server, and am not running a proxy, already checked that stuff... haven't had a chance to check for spyware or the like yet, will get to that later... The weevil of doooooooooom

OS is Windows XP Professional:
was no spyware on the machine, used Adware to scan the registry processes and files, seemed okay, still no ethernet; but another problem has shown up.

The computer does not turn on anymore, I think my PSU died, but I'm not too sure, because it was on one moment, and not the next, went to go use the other computer, and tried to mount an SMB share, and the computer wasn't there, so I check it out, and it is turned off... why? Well, I don't know, but when I try to turn it on, nothing becomes powered.

Nothing smells fried, so that's good, I suppose, but I don't know if it's just the PSU, or the PSU and the motherboard and devices, or whatever. Don't have access to another PSU to test at this time, other computer is AT formfactor, so, I have to order a new one, I suppose.
After that, I'll probably just reinstall, and hopefully the ethernet card works :) The weevil of doooooooooom

Well, okay, I replaced my fried PSU; still having the same problem, and I'm stumped, any ideas? Think it's a bad NIC? Maybe my next step is to do a format/reinstall? I don't know...

If all else fails use dynamite.....
But before you do, check and make sure all the connections inside are secure. I have seen where a machine will not start and it has just been the connector from the poweron switch to the motherboard needed a wiggle.

Thanks for the link, fixed everything :) That wracked my brain for some time... arg :p

Hey weevil,
if you sat on a problem for a month, and someone came along with knowledge and a link that helped you and saved you a bunch more work, a star would be courteous.

Sorry, was using a non-graphical browser at the time of my post, kind of skipped over the link at the time
