i am trying to use Ris to to image some new laptops how ever i am having problems with version of the install on the machine being."[Version 5.1 Build 2600, Language English]. "

Steps i took

1. Copy Winxp CD to server

2. Patch WinXp with serveric pack 1a

3. Create RIS Image

4. Image laptop from RIS Server

5. run windows update on laptop

As far as I know, Version 5.1 Build 2600, Language English is XP, not Windows 2000 Server?!?

yes the OS is windows XP but i am trying to uses RIS which is on the windows 200 server and most of the other posts i have seen about this error have been posted under this fourm.

the 2 support doc's you pointed me to i have allready looked at, none of the patches listed in this document are installed on the machine as the are from before service pack 1a from what i can tell.

thank you for you feed back

I had the same problem. Apparently, you cannot put any updates that change the ntoskrnl.

What I did was create an admin image of XP on a share, the slipstream SP1 into the image. Then create a base image on the RIS server by using that admin image. This way, at least the RIS image would have SP1 applied. Apply all apps, then Riprep it. Let SUS take care of the clients you throw down the image on, or manually update them after RIS'ing them.

Hope that helps a little. I prefer Ghost still, if you have similiar hardware.
