This is usually hardware related errors.

make sure you are using the veritas drivers for the device - also make sure it is on the Veritas HCL.

Check the event viewer, system log for any SCSI errors.

hi justin.

I noticed you posted a question on crc errors a few days ago with this drive.

Download this utility from sony and see if it finds any problems with the drive.

Also look at this document regarding crc errors. It lists the different areas to check for.

good luck

one more thought,

I saw this post for a different question on tektips. I take no credit for the answer.

This [CRC] is an annoying problem that I ran into awhile back. I had to place numerous calls to Veritas' tech support because I was using brand new drives and brand new tapes. I knew it wasn't the hardware that was causing the error message.

When I called Veritas they said that the CRCs errors could also be caused by transferring the data too fast. He had me lower my SCSI transfer rate and this seemed to help quite a bit. I still get the CRC error every now and then (once every 3 months or so, but far less than before which was at least once a week). For what it's worth lowering my transfer rate didn't really slow down my backups, but results can vary I suppose.

Own research - The SDX-420 IS an IDE device - Veritas will probably see this drive incorrectly and assume an incorrect default value for the drive. Try and right click the drive - select properties and open device configuration - my bet is, that the block- and buffersize are set to 1kb. Being an IDE device you shouldn't actually be able to change it, but if you can, increase the values (depending on OS and functionality) - just try blocksize 32kb and buffersize 256kb! If the block/buffersize field is greyed out you might need to isolate the drive on the IDE channel, in order to troubleshoot this problem.

thnx all for the help.
thnx jesperrim for your help too.

thnx too you it works now.
i go in devices to the "sony 1"
and then to properties to configuration and then i set the
block size on 32K
and buffer size on 256K
then i tried a new backup and it's working.
now he counts the bytes. i hope i can restore without any problems!

thank allot!!!
strange that i couldn't find anything about this on the veritas site.

You shouldn't have anymore problem restoring (rather than the normal...what backup tape?). Not sure why it's not listed anywhere - maybe cause it shouldn't be possible to change the block size on a Sony IDE drive.........

it's very strange but i'm happy that it all works! :)
thnx

i have no problems with restoring of the backup! :)

thnx
